Fifth grade students are learning how to use the microscope. In this lab, the children made a slide of the letter e. Then they looked at it using a hand lens and the three different magnifications under the microscope. Students then made a slide of an onion epidermis to view plant cells. Next they will swab their cheeks to observe their own cells. |

Razor, Ms. Daly's snake, is back at school from vacationing at Mrs. Dillon's house. He was hungry. Razar is a ball python which is a constrictor. He "hugs" his food to death. Rats are Razor's favorite food.
The milkweed outside the cafeteria has had some visitors. The monarch butterflies have stopped on their way down to Mexico to lay eggs. This week we found many monarch caterpillars on the milkweed. The second graders study the life cycle of plants and animals during the year. This was the perfect time to start observing the metamorphosis of this insect. May Howard students practiced their civil engineering skills the first week of school during science lab. After reviewing rules and procedures, the children built a control bridge out of a large index card placed on two support cups that were ten centimeters apart. Most of these bridges only held six to ten pennies. Students then redesigned their bridges. They could only use the index card and masking tape. The index card could not be taped to the cups or table. We have some very capable future civil engineers. Many of our classes ran out of pennies because their bridges supported so much weight. The older students calculated the weight of the pennies. The younger children practiced their number skills by counting the number of pennies their bridges held. Students found that the triangular and the cylinder shaped bridges held the most pennies. Students learned that air takes up space. They had to squeeze the bulb of the pipette to remove the air before the water could enter. Water striders and water spiders walk on water because of surface tension. The children observed surface tension while counting the drops of water they placed on their pennies. The surface tension caused the water to make a water dome on the penny. |
